The Harmonized System of Nomenclature (HSN) is a 6-digit uniform code that classifies over 5,000 products and is accepted worldwide. The HSN code was developed by the World Customs Organization (WCO) and came into use in 1988. This system has been introduced for the systematic classification of goods all over the world.
It contains about 5,000 commodity groups, each identified by a six-digit code. These codes are arranged in a logical and legal structure supported by well-defined rules to achieve uniform classification. These classifications facilitate international trade.
The HSN structure contains 21 sections, 99 chapters, 1,244 headings, and 5,224 subheadings. Each section is divided into chapters, each chapter is divided into headings, and each heading is divided into subheadings. Section titles describe broad categories of goods; chapter titles describe products in detail; heading titles describe specific attributes; and subheading titles describe product characteristics or variations.
